Holmes
A Theory
What if you walk into that room and everyone stares at you? What would you think? What would they think? That you hate being late, so very late. Would they believe that you had saved a kitten from a tree that the mayor drove from his office to congratulate you on your mission and virtue? Do they think you were caught in traffic created by strange cows wandering the city, blocking pedestrians from work and places they wish to be? Would they think that you tripped and fell through a time portal, only to arrive in the Jurassic period, and on your way back, you missed-judged the time that you needed to arrive? Do they wonder if you took a wrong turn and ended up sitting on the back of an elephant, trading conversation points with acrobats and clowns? At the same time, the traveling circus makes its annual introductory parade. Maybe you were finally on time, but as you scrambled up the stairs, you ran right into a Queen of somewhere and had to try to keep your head. There are a great many things they can think about you and your lateness, but by looking closely at you, it is more likely that you were late simply because you slept in.
